Kurzbeschreibung / Short description

This letter from 1896, posted at the German consulate in Shanghai, was taken to Hong Kong by the Norddeutsche Lloyd (Ostasiatische Hauptlinie) and transferred there to the "Empress of China" of the Canadian Pacific Line. This ship from 1891 sailed at a speed of 16 knots, measured almost 6000 GRT and sank in 1911.

Remarks: A Canadian service Hong Kong-Vancouver came into service in 1891 with 3 "Empress" ships. Both routes often carried mail from Japan to England, which had previously gone via Hong Kong and Suez.
